Securing Your Home When Going On Holiday
Whether it’s a staycation or city break, English seaside or exotic sunshine, wherever you are heading on holiday, it’s important to know that your property is safe while you’re away. Follow our guide and you can enjoy your trip without worrying about your home. Now all you need to worry about is packing that suitcase!
Locking Doors & Windows
Ensure that every door and window is securely locked before you leave home. If doors have deadlocks or bolts, make sure you use them and don’t forget your windows. Many of us leave our windows unlocked while at home, especially during the warmer months, but locking them offers an extra layer of security when you’re away.
Check CCTV is Working
CCTV is an effective deterrent to would-be burglars and also offers the peace of mind that you can keep an eye on your home remotely from wherever you are. Before you head off on holiday, make sure that your CCTV system is working reliably or book in a CCTV service for extra reassurance. If you’re going somewhere with a significant time difference, it might be worth asking someone you trust to check the CCTV for you from time to time.
Put Your Lights on a Timer
Setting your lights to come on in the evenings (and in the morning during the winter) is a simple yet effective way to give the impression that someone is home while the house is empty. Timer plugs are cheap to buy and easy to set up, plus they can also be used for appliances such as TVs and radios, making it sound like your home is occupied too.
Test Your Burglar Alarm
Check your burglar alarm is working before you leave home and don’t forget to set it. Many modern systems can be monitored remotely, meaning you can stay connected to your home however far away you travel. Alternatively, security experts like ours can monitor your home while you are on holiday, so you can focus on having fun.
Leave a Spare Key With Someone You Trust
You never know what might happen at home while you’re on holiday. Leaving a spare key with a trusted loved one, friend or neighbour is the best way to ensure that your home can be accessed in the event of an emergency or even if you misplace your keys while travelling.
This can also be handy if you have houseplants or a garden that needs watering, or if you are away for a few weeks and want someone to check your post.
